During the feudal age, there was a prison (roya) in Takashokoji, the entertainment district of Hachinohe's city center, so the area was named "Rocho." The alleyway connecting Rocho and Nagayokocho came to be known as “Rocho Rensagai”, because “rensa” means “chain” or “connection”. It is a lively pedestrian street with many welcoming shops.
